U.S. Imports Surge Amid Concerns Over Strikes and Tariffs
The United States has witnessed a significant increase in imports, driven partly by concerns over potential dockworker strikes and the market’s anticipation of higher tariffs on Chinese goods following the recent election. This trend has triggered a frontloading of imports, especially on major U.S. trade lanes, putting upward pressure on freight rates.
Booming Intra-Asia Trade
Trade within Asia, particularly between Japan, China, and South Korea, continues to thrive. Increasing consumer demand and strong manufacturing activity in the region provide a promising outlook for the intra-Asia trade routes, which play a pivotal role in sustaining the market’s momentum.

However, larger vessels such as Neo-Panamax ships continue to see rates above summer levels due to limited availability and ongoing disruptions. For example, 6-12 month time-charter rates for Neo-Panamax vessels have risen to $97,000/day, up 5.4% from earlier this year.
Meanwhile, the global container ship fleet is expanding at a year-on-year growth rate of 8.1%, surpassing 30 million TEUs of aggregate tonnage as of October. Despite the fleet’s growth, demolition activity remains low, with just four vessels scrapped by the end of October, reflecting the current strong market conditions.
